Professor Furlotte’s research is concerned with critical approaches to the social study of aging, emphasizing growing older of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people and those experiencing complex chronic health conditions, including HIV. His past research has focused on aging-related services for older LGBT people, HIV and aging, and incorporating mindfulness into social justice approaches to social work practice. Furlotte’s current research projects include his doctoral project, a qualitative study of older gay men’s experiences aging with HIV in Ontario; a community-based research study describing successful aging from the insider perspectives of women and men living with HIV themselves; and a pilot study exploring the role of cultural icons in the construction of resilience among LGBT people. His work has appeared in journals including Canadian Social Work Review, Australian Social Work, Journal of Gerontological Social Work, Ageing & Society, Research on Aging and Canadian Journal on Aging/La Revue canadienne du vieillissement.
